The Sky is the Limit for these Wheaton, IL Updates
Smart kitchen layout changes = major impact in this Wheaton home. J&J Construction began with rooms that had some wonderful details – such as generous use of skylights – and created a versatile family space.
Goals: Like many homes we work with, this kitchen and dining area were dragged down by dark woods, an abundance of earth tones, and a layout that felt cramped. A floating center island occupied precious floor space, and the family required extra storage.
Thoughtful Configuration Changes
By removing the island in the kitchen area and creating an extended counter with seating, we gave the homeowners room to navigate. Suddenly, a clear pathway was revealed, and the room immediately felt wider.
The microwave and oven were relocated to another wall, creating an efficient work triangle for food preparation. New KitchenAid appliances were installed, including a new range hood. The removal of an over-the-range microwave also created a feeling of a room with higher ceilings.
Transformational Color Changes
The fine details are what make successful renovations a joy for years to come. The homeowners selected an all-new color scheme that brings a hint of seaside hues to Illinois!
The choice of backsplash tile in Villa Seaside is transformative. This highly polished ceramic tile comes in a classic shape, and added just the right amount of color to the new kitchen layout.
New countertops in HanStone Quartz Italian Waves replaced the old ones. The creamy white tones have subtle veins of rich grey that pick up the tones of the cabinet hardware and appliances. The counters were also extended to create a functional space for informal dining.
Keeping it simple, the sink was replaced with a Kohler/Sterling McAllister under-mount single bowl, and an efficient new Kohler Cruette in Vibrant Stainless added. Both match the finish of the stainless appliances perfectly, and complement the uncluttered look of the kitchen.
Upgraded Storage and a Whole New Look
Cabinets by Woodharbor were key to these big changes. J&J installed much-needed extra storage in a sleek wall unit.
All cabinets chosen by the homeowners were Woodharbor’s Breeze, with Full Overlay Stockman Doors and drawers. Keeping it light they were finished in Simply White paint with an enamel sheen. Blumotion soft-close doors and drawers provide quiet operation.
For a touch of quiet elegance, the upper cabinets had light rail trim installed to the bottom edges. Oversized Classic Cove crown molding was added at the top, another small detail that draws the eye upwards.
For the homeowners, their new space provides a dining space that harmonizes beautifully with the existing skylights. Foot traffic moves smoothly over the new oak hardwood flooring. The family selected a Dark Walnut & Ebony stained finish for a grounding contrast to the new white cabinetry and practicality.
Now, tall ceilings, natural light, and subtle colors are the first thing visitors notice. This wonderful space has lofty charms to spare!
