This is a great year to add – or update a deck on your home. The upside of the lifestyle changes that have us staying at home more? More time to enjoy your backyard, and the possibility of taking your remote work or school date outside. Here at J&J Construction, decks are one of our most popular projects, and we’re big fans of the new maintenance-free deck materials.
If you haven’t been shopping for deck materials in the last few years, you’re in for a surprise. Composite decking products just continue to get better. In the last 10 years alone, the available types have quadrupled. What this means for you as a homeowner is that there are longer-lasting, more versatile decks and outdoor spaces that are possible. If you’ve been waiting for white rails or a teak look, it’s time to contact us!
These fantastic good looks are all based on the technology of using composite wood and up to 95% recycled plastic and wood to create a long-lasting, natural-looking alternative to treated wood planks. You can see an example of what synthetic decking materials look like above. In the Trex products we use, a mixture of plastic and wood is mixed, heated, and then turned into new boards that are virtually indistinguishable from regular wood. You won’t notice – until you realize you’re free of restaining, treating, and worrying about your deck!
Just like premium vinyl floors and other products, synthetic deck planks can look so real they’ll provoke conversations. For each type, the natural wood grain textures are incorporated into the design. The shading, whorls, and patina of woods like cypress, teak, and cedar are all available, and have all the charm of seasoned wood planks. (But without the splinters or need to refinish!)
They’re also easy to clean. A hose, light brushing, and a bit of dish soap will take care of almost any quick refreshes you’ll need. These deck materials are true “soap and water clean-up” products. A semi-annual cleaning will keep it looking great and prevent any possible problems with mold or dirt build-up.
Just like wood, maintenance-free deck materials can be used for all the outdoor living features you’ve been hankering for. There are no limits to the types of platform decks, seating areas, two-tone planks, or integrated planters you can add to your backyard space. Composite wood products can also be used on railings, steps, and around pools. Products like Trex can take the heat, withstand the foot traffic, and resist the spills – all while keeping their looks.
They’re also the perfect complement for a pergola, trellis, or other feature. If you have a focal point that’s fallen flat, consider building a deck that frames it beautifully, using colors that make it pop.
If you’re worried about blocking the view from a sunroom or screened porch, sunken conversation pits are also a way to add seating without changing the landscape!
Prepare to be amazed at the selection of finishes and details that are available in Trex composite decking. The J&J design team can help you visualize your new space with choices like rich “tropical” tones, crisp whites, and classic earth tones. You’ll be able to work with your home’s current exterior colors and even patio furniture to find just the right blend of shades and tones.
