Historic Wheaton Kitchen Gets a Warm, Functional Makeover

At J&J Construction, we believe every home tells a story—especially in a town as rich in history as Wheaton. For this recent home remodeling Wheaton project, our design team was thrilled to renovate the kitchen and butler’s pantry of a 100-year-old home in one of Wheaton’s historic neighborhoods. The original kitchen and pantry were in disrepair, and the homeowners needed a complete transformation—without changing the footprint. We did replace everything except for the original windows and doors. The result? Charm meets modern function in this ambitious remodel

Walnut Cabinetry and Vintage Charm

Kitchen remodeling in Wheaton doesn’t get much more unique than this. Warm wood tones in kitchens are making a comeback and the standout feature in this space is the beautiful walnut cabinetry. We installed Bertch cabinets in a natural walnut finish with Winston doors and drawers—complete with crown molding and decorative end panels. Glass-front cabinet doors open up the space and offer a perfect spot to display treasured stemware.

Adding vintage charm, the homeowners refinished their original antique stove, which now serves as a striking centerpiece. The stove is framed by a quartz backsplash in Cambria’s MonTaaj—a luxurious surface that’s also used throughout the kitchen for the countertops. These countertops offer warm layers of beige and taupe with antique gold accents, perfectly complementing the rich walnut tones.

When embarking on a kitchen renovation, plumbing considerations are vital, especially when working on an older home. It’s imperative that plumbing is done properly to avoid issues in the future. This kitchen design includes a single-bowl workstation sink by Kohler in stainless steel. A workstation sink includes accessories like a cutting board, colander and racks, making prep a breeze. Complimenting this classically designed sink is a faucet in Venetian bronze, absolutely on trend with finishes we’re seeing this year. The butler’s pantry includes a second undermount sink also in stainless steel, with the same bronze faucet. This sink is naturally a bit smaller in size, but also comes with useful accessories.

Seamless Quartz Backsplash & High-End Appliances

This kitchen remodeling Wheaton project also embraced some of today’s top design trends—like a full quartz backsplash for a seamless, low-maintenance finish. It’s not only more hygienic but eliminates grout lines for easier upkeep and a sleeker look.

Hidden behind custom cabinetry are fully integrated appliances, including a 42-inch Sub-Zero refrigerator and a Miele dishwasher, keeping the space clean and uninterrupted. A dedicated microwave cabinet, stainless steel workstation sink, and a matching butler’s pantry with a second sink round out the functional features of this remodel.

The main floor tiles are 12×24 Luce Vallelunga tiles in oro. “Oro” translates to “gold”, which complements the MonTaaj color counters and backsplash. This kitchen is so warm and inviting we can almost smell the delicious foods that will soon be served in it.

Comfort Meets Innovation

We added thoughtful comfort features throughout the space, including under-cabinet lighting, recessed can lights on dimmers, and even radiant floor heating under the porcelain Luce Vallelunga tiles. Because this older Wheaton home relied on radiators, we installed a Schulter DITRA-HEAT system for consistent warmth during colder months.

Under-cabinet lighting offers several practical and aesthetic benefits such as improved task lighting, enhanced elegance, energy efficiency, and increased safety.

The finishing touches—such as Acadia White and Palladian Blue paint from Benjamin Moore, beadboard details, and a custom bookshelf coffee station—make this remodel feel truly tailored.

The elegance of the space is further enhanced by walnut-trimmed doorways and a matching range hood, adding warmth and continuity to the design. Together, these solid appliances, vintage elements, and thoughtful architectural details elevate the kitchen into a refined living space.
