A retired couple, Mark and Michal, came to J&J Construction when they had finally had enough of their cramped kitchen. After raising children in their Naperville home, the once-gleaming hardwood floors throughout the main level also needed some love.
The biggest challenge facing this couple was the way their kitchen functioned. There’s nothing wrong with an L-shaped kitchen, but it just didn’t work for this space. One arm of the L cut off the flow between the kitchen and dining room, and housed the sink and dishwasher in odd places.
The design was also outdated, with wood cabinets that made the space feel darker than it needed to, old black appliances, plain white squared-edge countertops, and fluorescent overhead lighting that wasn’t doing anyone any favors.
Then there was the island. It added extra counter space and storage, sure, but we knew it could do more.
Mark and Michal needed a modern kitchen design refresh so they could enjoy using their cooking space and feel proud to show it off to guests.
