How To Style Your Bathroom Grandmillennial

When it comes to bathroom remodeling, no one stays on top of current trends like J&J Construction. We love to tap into what current homeowners desire and pair their design ideas with our professional advice. The result is a finished product you’ll love for years.

While some clients are strictly modern or traditional, we’re seeing more and more homeowners request “Granny Chic” otherwise known as Grandmillennial. Not only are millennials selecting names for their children that were popular decades ago, but they’re also reaching back to that time period for decor ideas, particularly when it comes to bathrooms. This is an easy spot to incorporate these details.

So grab a Werther’s Original, your comfortable afghan, and let’s dive into a few ideas that can help you transform your bathroom space to this increasingly popular aesthetic.

In order to achieve the Grandmillennial style, you’ll want to combine comfort and nostalgia with a bit of quirkiness. Impeccable style with bold patterns replace the muted gray tones of a farmhouse aesthetic. No chipped woodwork here. Think heirloom pieces, floral wallpaper, rattan, birdcages, antique mirrors or monogrammed pieces. You’re trying to achieve a vibe that makes you feel instantly at home–your grandmother’s home–but with a fresh take of course.

One of the first ways you can start to incorporate this style is by adding in pops of color. This might be as simple as a purple hand towel, deep blue artwork, or a kelly green rug. If you’d like to lean into this more, consider a pale green vanity. If you’re not ready to replace all of your kitchen cabinets yet, start with a bathroom. This is a smaller space where you can experiment with a design idea.

A great place to start is your mirrors and light fixtures. An antique mirror will give you the look you desire, and the right light fixtures, such as wall sconces, will achieve this as well.

Mirrors should be framed in a brass or gold finish. Think ornate and interesting. Any shape will do. You can also go for a more natural rattan or wicker framed mirror.

For light fixtures, stick with these same finishes. A patterned lampshade is perfect as an accent light. Although you’re looking to achieve this granny chic aesthetic, you’ll want to make sure your lighting is functional as well.

Before you take a sledgehammer to your dated floors, take inspiration from them. Small square or rectangular tiles in black and white are retro and modern simultaneously. Some color underneath your feet provides interest and your floor can actually be a focal point of the bathroom if you allow it. Feeling bold? Try a giant pattern on the floor like a flower or hexagon. For more tile inspiration, click HERE.

Shower tile shapes and colors should compliment floor tiles. Are pink subway tiles back in style? Well, if you’re embracing the Grandmillennial style, then they’re not off the table completely. The trick is to balance all of the bathroom components so it looks intentional and fresh.

When choosing your bathroom sink in this style, consider a pedestal. Some homeowners worry about storage, but there are plenty of ways to incorporate storage into a bathroom with a pedestal sink, like wicker baskets.

If you’re completely renovating, check out a bowl sink with a tiled pattern reminiscent of your granny’s patterned china. If you’re redoing a hall bath, this is your opportunity to play around with this style to its fullest. Exposed fixtures will achieve this look as well.

If you’re renovating a full bath, do not ignore your bathtub/shower space. Select tiles and fixtures that will compliment the rest of the bathroom. Make sure you have enough storage space for your personal items, and if you have the space to include a separate tub, then do it! A pedestal tub with floral wallpaper behind it gives off the Grandmillenial style to its max. Take a look at darker finishes like bronze when looking at fixtures here. And don’t forget about accent pieces. You’ll see a bathtub tray here adds a touch of  comfort that invites you in for a soak and good read. Don’t forget to don your shower cap, like Granny would.
